When I first started my Etsy Shop I often looked at other successful shops and thought WOW they have thousands of sales, “what can I do to achieve the same success and increase my sales?” I would see successful shops with hundreds of listings and other successful shops with less than 40 listings in their shop. It got me wondering about the amount of people they were bringing in to view their items. It must be a lot, right? Then… how many people that viewed their listings were buying? They knew how to convert browsers in to buyers but at what rate?
YOUR CONVERSION RATE
The most important stat that Etsy has available to us is our conversion rate. Meaning how many times will someone view an item before you get a sale? Wouldn’t it be amazing if that were 100%, 100% of the time when someone clicked on your listing they bought it. Well, we know that’s not going to be the case. So you need to know what the average conversion rate is, what ball park should you expect? The average conversion rate on Etsy is 1% (stated by Etsy SEO Tool Marmalead). If you are like the average Etsy Store this means you will need about 100 views in order to get a sale.
Yes, you can get above 1% with the right shop & listing optimization and a little marketing thrown in there; however, don’t get down on yourself if you are watching your stats like a hawk wondering why you havn’t made a sale when 50 people have viewed your item. Deep breath, it’s normal… the good news is you can take action to increase your conversion rate and then once you have a large amount of views on converting items, voila the revenue comes in. THREE QUICK FIXES TO INCREASE ETSY SALES
So what can you do to increase your conversion rate… here are three quick fixes you can do on the listings you already have.
You don’t have to do a complete overhaul, you work with the listings you already have and make them even better! When a customer lands on your listing you can increase the likeliness that they will purchase! You can increase your Etsy sales!
1. SIMPLIFY YOUR DESCRIPTION
Hook your customer in the first sentence of the description, appeal to their senses and describe the problem you are solving for them.
Challenge yourself to give the necessary information in the fewest amount of words as possible. Deliver the important information in a quick, concise way.
Make the description visually appealing and organized. Break up your description into paragraphs with headings and use bullet points.
2. UP YOUR PHOTOGRAPHY GAME
Do you have at least one photo in natural light and a detail shot? These are photo opportunities that will help convert into sales. The customer will have a clear view of your item. My goal is to have a customer feel like they’ve held the item. They will be more likely to purchase!
Think about what text you can add to your photos. Is there something in your description that you really want your customer to know? Consider adding this text to a photo using applications like www.canva.com or photoshop. If a customer doesn’t navigate down to the description then they have the information face up, making the decision to purchase easier.
3. LET YOUR CUSTOMER KNOW WHEN THEIR ITEMS WILL ARRIVE WITH SHIPPING PROFILES
Etsy will provide a view to show your customer when their order is placed, when you will ship it and when it should arrive, this creates confidence and sets expectations.
To enable this view for the customer, make sure you have a shipping profile set up and connected to your listings. Navigate to: Shop Manager> Settings> Shipping Settings>Shipping Profiles (you can create multiple).
Fill out the requested information such as where the item is shipping from, your processing time, shipping carrier and mail class and Etsy will calculate the shipping time to display to the customer.
